SLE CC Job Expectations and Policies
SLE Community Connection (SLE CC)
SLE thrives because of its strong alumni network, which plays an essential role in enriching the experience of each new cohort. The Community Connections (SLE CC) program gives SLE alumni the opportunity to mentor current students, offering guidance and encouragement as they navigate the program. While mentors may review first drafts and provide feedback on papers, the primary focus is on building a supportive mentoring relationship. Alumni bring invaluable insight into the challenges students face and know there is no single path to success in SLE. This is a chance to be a “big sib,” helping students grow and succeed with assignments, readings, and preparation for the 8-unit residential course.
Job Description
The primary role of an SLE CC is to mentor students in the current SLE class. This involves:
- Supporting students with guidance and encouragement rather than correcting or copyediting their work.
- Sharing personal experiences while acknowledging that each student’s experience is unique.
- Staying on the schedule provided by the SLE admin team each quarter.
- Communicating with the SLE admin team about any questions, concerns, or issues—especially if students are unresponsive.
Position Terms
- Compensation: $100 per student per quarter, paid at $20/hour for up to 2 hours per week (not exceeding 5 total hours per student per quarter). Exceeding the 5-hour limit may result in ineligibility for future participation in the program.
- Timekeeping: SLE CCs must submit a timecard each week. Hours will be reviewed midterm and at the end of each quarter by the SLE teaching team.
- Work Limits: Undergraduate students may hold multiple campus jobs but are limited to a maximum of 15 total work hours per week across all positions.
Eligibility
- SLE CCs are current Stanford undergraduate students who have successfully completed the program and demonstrated strong performance.
- Alums with outstanding INC grades must resolve them before applying.
- Students who received a grade of “NP” for any quarter in SLE are not eligible to serve as mentors.
- While alumni preferences are taken into account, SLE reserves the right to:
- Determine mentor assignments.
- Decide the number of students per mentor.
- Decline applicants based on class year, previous performance in SLE or as an SLE CC, or other relevant factors.
- Appointments may be terminated at any time for cause, unsatisfactory performance, or programmatic or budgetary reasons, including lack of funding.
